Timothy Chung: From Birthday Party to WPT Prime UK Champion
The 2024 WPT Prime Championship
The $1,100 buy-in, $5,000,000 GTD WPT Prime Championship will take place from December 8-14 at Wynn Las Vegas as part of the WPT World Championship Festival, which runs from December 3-23. Last year, Calvin Anderson won the 2023 WPT Prime Championship, topping a record field of 10,512 players and taking home $1,386,280.
The WPT Prime series has been incredibly successful, winning the Global Poker Award for Best Mid-Major Tour/Circuit. With exciting events like the ClubWPT Gold $5M Invitational and the WPT World Championship, the WPT Prime World Championship remains a major highlight of the 2024 poker calendar.
Timothy Chung: WPT Prime UK Champion
After claiming victory at the £1,100 WPT Prime UK Championship in September, Timothy Chung won £57,660 and secured a seat in the WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas. Chung, who is no stranger to poker success, shares his journey from casual poker games at a birthday party to becoming a professional player.
From Birthday Party to Poker Pro
A 35-year-old from Birmingham, UK, Chung originally studied engineering at university before dropping out to focus on poker. He worked as a dealer for three months to gain experience in live poker games.
“I learned to play poker at 16 years old at a friend’s birthday party. I already knew the hand rankings, which made learning the game easier. I also played Facebook poker with play chips to sharpen my skills,” Chung recalls.
Chung takes pride in his consistent success in poker. “I don’t think I can pick a single specific accomplishment due to the variance in tournaments, but being able to consistently beat the games since I started is something I’m proud of,” he said.
Chung’s Poker Journey and Future Goals
Today, Chung plays both online and live poker, participating in tournaments and cash games up to $100/$200. He has visited Las Vegas multiple times for the World Series of Poker (WSOP), but his focus has always been on winning a bracelet.
“I’ve always aimed to win a bracelet, but I usually only stay for about three weeks. Now, I’ll be focusing on the WPT World Championship, and I’m looking forward to playing in a slightly smaller field for the first time,” he said.
